Lord Shiva forms
part of the Hindu pantheon of Gods that is worshipped by Hindus around the
globe and South Africa is no exception. Lord Shiva is also forms part of
the Hindu Trinity.
Shiva, l’un
des dieux du panthéon hindou, est adoré autour du globe ; sa présence en
Afrique du Sud n’est pas une exception. Il fait également partie de la
trinité de l’hindouisme classique.
Shiva is regarded as the
destroyer of all evil and negative energies and the creator of the new and
the benevolent qualities of life. To demonstrate this element, I like to
quote from the eminent scholar Ananda K. Coomaraswamy, seeing beyond the
unsurpassed rhythm, beauty, power and grace of the Nataraja, once wrote of
it "It is the clearest image of the activity of God which any art or
religion can boast of."
Shiva est
perçu comme le destructeur de tous les démons et énergies négatives ; il
est à la source des nouvelles qualités humaines de charité et de
bienveillance. Pour démontrer ceci, j’aime citer l’érudit Ananda K.
Coomaraswamy qui, voyant au delà du rythme sans égal, de la beauté, du
pouvoir et de la grâce, du Nataraja, écrivit une fois à son sujet « C’est
l’image la plus claire de l’activité de Dieu dont un art ou une religion
puisse se vanter. »
I worship Lord Shiva
and for me, this dance is the illustration of our existence. The painting
embraces this concept and allows me to continously stay focused about the
purpose of a full life.
Je vénère le Dieu
Shiva et pour moi, cette dance est l’illustration de notre existence.
Cette peinture embrasse ce concept et m’autorise à rester constamment
concentré sur le dessein d’une vie très active.
Although the painting has a
sea of red, Lord shiva is associated with the colour of red, to show the
vibrancy, the energy, and the dark figure in the background is Lord Shiva
Nataraja performing the cosmic Dance.
Cette peinture
est à dominante de rouge parce que le rouge est la couleur qu’on associe à
Shiva pour montrer la vibration, l’énergie, et la silhouette sombre, à
l’arrière-plan est Shiva Nataraja exécutant sa danse cosmique.
If one had to visit a hindu temple,
then one will see a sanctum sanctorum where a statuette will be found. If
it is a Shiva Temple then we will find a Shiva murti and a « lingam » in
the sanctum sanctorum. By passing the contrasts of the red and black, one
is playing with the experiences of worship and the actual experiences of
painting ie. the painting process can be a window to my spiritual make up.
Si quelqu’un
avait à visiter un temple hindou, alors, il verrait un sanctum sanctorum,
où se trouverait une statuette. S’il s’agit d’un temple de Shiva, alors
nous trouverons une forme de Shiva et un « lingam » dans le saint des
saints. Soit dit à propos des contrastes de rouge et de noir, qu’il s’agit
d’un jeu entre mes pratiques cultuelles et mes expériences artistiques, le
processus pictural pourrait être celui d’une fenêtre ouvrant sur la
palette de couleurs de mon univers spirituel.
